Yoga Therapy

What is Yoga Therapy?

Yoga therapy is the application of yoga practices to help relieve specific symptoms or a health condition that is troubling. In a yoga therapy session instruction focuses on the client’s specific condition and how the yoga techniques can help them feel better or improve their function, rather than on the techniques or methods of a yoga practice.

Yoga therapy aligns the unique health needs of the client with the ancient eastern yoga practices and traditions with modern western medical systems bridging the gap that is often left in modern healthcare.  Sessions may include whole body movement, breathing exercises, postures, meditation, relationship building or the promotion of behavioural changes.

Yoga Therapy can be used to support:

Mental health conditions : Stress, Depression, Anxiety, PTSD, Grief, Eating Disorders, Addiction

Physical health conditions : back pain, musculoskeletal problems, post injury recovery, high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, autoimmune diseases,

digestive health; IBS, constipation, diarrhoea, IBD, Crohn's, heart disease, insomnia, fatigue, osteoporosis,

women’s health; fertility, endometriosis, PCOS, miscarriage, IVF, menopause, pre and post natal

Who is it for?

Anyone - all ages and abilities

In Imogen’s own words: “The best way to explain the role of a Yoga Therapeutic Specialist is that we support doctors and healthcare providers as part of a multi disciplinary team to facilitate a patients journey back to optimal health. We are trained in both Eastern and Western modalities and believes healthcare requires teamwork and a multifaceted approach to wellness from different vantage points. Yoga is a tool that can support so many issues, however it is important to make clear it is not the job of a therapeutic specialist to diagnose.

I have had many clients come to me who’s doctors have recommended they work with yoga but a huge amount of my work over the last 5 years has been word of mouth.  I have worked with clients after hip replacements, mastectomies, back pain, sciatica, before and after chid birth, shoulder surgery, panic attacks, anxiety, depression and more!  I have also been privileged to be asked to partner with many charities in the UK to help their clients with the tools of yoga; SHP (Single Homeless Project), The Teenage Cancer Trust, Trekstock Young Adult Cancer Support, to name a few.”

I already attended group yoga classes with Imogen. These were a very relaxing and reflective way to end the week. I always felt a sense of calm and grounding despite the sometimes chaotic way of life that was happening around me.  Leading up to COVID I went through a series of events that took a toll on my well being. One of my dear friends gifted me a one on one session with Imogen. I used this session when I felt like I was at rock bottom.  I remember this first session where I felt broken and completely lost.

From that moment on I saw Imogen it was unbelievable how amazing she was at gaging where I was at.  She holistically planned my sessions and through the practice of yoga, I was able to start again. I have never really experienced therapy in the past where I could feel changes as I did with the work I did with Imogen. I didn’t really see myself getting past that first week but through her guidance, support, expertise and deeply caring attitude I was able to learn from her sessions techniques that I could use independently.

Over the course of the year not only did I gain strength and find joy again but my life dramatically changed. Imogen adapted my sessions to help through pregnancy and life in general. There are no words to express my gratitude for Imogen. Finding joy and a sense of peace during times of uncertainty was the biggest gift.

I found Imogen whilst searching for an alternative remedy for endometriosis, at that point I had suffered with endo for 16 years and had used the ‘traditional’ treatments of pain killers, hormone therapy and surgery but none of those gave me the relief I needed from chronic pain and inflammation.  After an initial consultation in which I explained my symptoms and shared my menstrual cycle pattern, I had embarked on 4 one-to-one sessions with Imogen and have not looked back.  Each session (1 per week of my menstrual cycle) was carefully crafted and constructed with poses designed to ease my symptoms and also to support the natural processes going on in my body at each stage.  After each session Imogen shared notes on what we had worked on so that I could embark on a daily practice at home, only 15 minutes per day but 5 months later I am still doing my (at least) 15 minutes of practice per day and I still can’t quite believe the transformation.

I cannot remember the last time I had severe pain in my hips, legs and knees (but if it was to return I have just the pose to offer relief from this), bloating and bladder pain have reduced significantly too.  I do still have other endo symptoms but severity of them overall has lessened.  My mental resilience and strength have improved no end through yoga, I have a sense of taking back control, rather than allowing this disease to control my life and my choices.

Imogen is an amazing yoga teacher and therapeutic specialist but offers so much more than this, she genuinely cares and wants to help others, I would highly recommend any fellow Endometriosis sufferers to seek Imogen’s help, I cannot thank her enough.

I know Imogen from Yangon, where I had attended many of her classes and had always enjoyed the creative way she puts together flows. By about half-way through my pregnancy, I felt it probably wasn't advisable for me (a relative yoga rookie) to continue following online group classes (due to COVID), so I started taking private lessons with Imogen. We were on opposite sides of the world, and video really isn't an ideal medium for yoga classes, but I was so impressed by how intuitively Imogen managed to anticipate my needs and mood. She helped me as much with the mental side as with the physical side of pregnancy; exploring themes around acceptance as my pregnancy progressed and our practice became more restorative, and then around renewal after my baby was born. When I look back, she essentially wound me down towards the birth and then cranked me back up again afterwards!

Despite the chaos of what was happening globally in 2020, and rather a dramatic first 24 hours of life for my baby, I will always look back on my pregnancy journey with a sense of calm strength for which I will be eternally grateful to Imogen and her incredible support.
